Dive sites
The famous USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, a WWII cargo ship lying just off a black-sand beach. A shore dive, reachable from shallow to around 30 metres, covered in coral and busy with fish day and night.
“Went for the second time to USAT Liberty Wreck. This time we went kind of inside? The entry wasn’t as difficult as Boga Wreck. Even tho this is the second time i’m still in awe. I just love it.”

“50/50 ish visibility. Entry is from the shore; rocky entry (still ok for beginners). Really great wreck, we went to the front and middle side of the wreck (although it is still outside but it’s super good). Found a group of sweetlips, grouper, and an octopus.”

“Rocky entry. The swell n current quite mild to moderate on the surface so it is quite hard to get in if you’re alone. Glad i had my divemaster holding me while i’m wearing my fins otherwise it’ll be a bit hard. Diverse marine life. I saw moray eels, turtle, clownfishes, and other reef fishes. Anyways, there are frames where corals are planted. I hope they plant more!”

Tulamben, on the north-east coast of Bali, is one of the most accessible world-class dives anywhere: the USAT Liberty wreck sits a short swim off a black-sand beach, so most of the diving is done from shore. When to dive and conditions
East Bali is warm year-round, and the wreck can be dived at any time of day; many divers do it before dawn to be first in the water. The depths, temperatures and dive times in the panel above come straight from the logged dives. Beyond the Liberty, the coast offers coral slopes, muck sites for macro life, and a couple of artificial-reef wrecks.
Getting there
Tulamben is a two-to-three-hour drive from south Bali or from Ubud. Most dives are shore entries over the cobble beach, with porters carrying tanks; operators along the coast run guided dives and courses.
