Why I built this

I came back from five days in Malapascua this January with thirteen dives logged and maybe four of them with anything written down. I remember the night dive at Lighthouse Reef, my first ever, because a mandarinfish came out right on cue. I remember Kimud Shoal for the thresher sharks. The other nine dives are a depth, a duration, and a site name I'd have to look up to put in order. That gap between diving a site and remembering it later is the problem Currents is built to close.

What it does

Currents pulls dive data straight from your dive computer. Import from more than fifteen models, including Shearwater, Scubapro, and Suunto, over Bluetooth, or log a dive by hand in under a minute if your computer isn't supported yet. Switching from another app works too: Currents reads Garmin's FIT files, MacDive's XML export, and Subsurface's SSRF format directly. Depth, dive time, site, and photos stay attached to each entry, so thirteen dives from the same week don't collapse into one blur a year later.

Tag your buddies on a dive, follow other divers, and see where people have recently dived nearby. Dive site pages show entry type, typical visibility, and photos other divers posted, so you know before a boat trip whether a site matches your experience level.

Who it's for

It's built for divers who want to pull up every dive with a certain buddy, or every dive at a certain site, years after logging it. If a paper logbook already works for you, Currents won't change your mind.

Where it falls short

Currents is iOS only right now, so if you dive with an Android phone, this isn't for you yet. Import covers fifteen-plus dive computer brands over Bluetooth, plus UDDF and FIT files. Subsurface supports over two hundred computers across 28 brands, and it's free; check the compatibility list before buying anything on the strength of this page. Cloud backup and manual logging are free. SAC rate tracking, PDF and CSV export, and the built-in dive calculators sit behind Currents Pro, a paid tier.

Why another dive log app

Most dive logging apps split into two camps: certification-org tools like PADI's and SSI's, built for tracking courses and certifications more than day-to-day diving, and dedicated logbook apps like MacDive and Subsurface, strong on the logbook itself but slower to modernize the interface. Subsurface is free and open source, and covers more hardware than anything else on the market. Currents is built to sit in between: current interface design, Bluetooth import for the most common recreational computers, and a social layer for divers who want one.
